Each valve has its own pneumatic actuator, so the ECU sets lift and timing separately for every cycle. At low rpm it opens only one exhaust valve per cylinder, sending the exhaust to one turbo so it spools faster. Manual settings away from the ideal cost power.

The combustion engine mostly just turns a generator and the electric motor drives the wheels. There is no gearbox. In gentle driving above 70 km/h a clutch engages and the engine drives the wheels directly. Braking charges the battery. Under hard acceleration the ECU steps the rpm so it sounds like shifting.

The ZR-V hybrid has no gears: Q adds and E reduces regen, N switches between D and N. The clutch works itself when shifting and pulling away. Downshifts get an automatic throttle blip, and a downshift that would overrev the engine is refused.
